First post

Having been swept along by the tide of Surrey blogging I've given in and started this as my token effort of recording life in KT4. Thanks to worcesterpark for the inspiration for the name. Anyway, to business:

I was pleased to see that with the outdoor temperature at 0.8 degrees my carriage on the train this morning came minus any heat. The cloudy breath of the assembled pilgrims bore witness to this but my usual winter "Scott of the Antarctic" commuting outfit helped fend off the elements.

I often get the 7.12 and I think I've finally cracked the code of the departure board at Worcester Park station...... if it shows that the train will be there at 7.12 it generally is. If it shows 7.13 then that means any time between 7.13 and 7.15 and if it shows 7.14 that is generally translated as "you'll be lucky". Has anyone else noticed this?

Something's afoot at Classic Cuts

Workmen are, well, at work on what used to be Classic Cuts, The Spinning Wheel and TOTDO (The Offie That Disappeared Overnight). Rumour has it that they're knocking the shops through to form some new Worcester Park megastore, but since the photo below was taken a couple of weeks ago the two shops on the right have been boarded up. Any takers on what comes next?

Yuletime travels

So, the time has come to leave the twinkling lights of Worcester Park and head up to the Peak District for Christmas to spend it in a little cottage in a place called Sparrowpit. Doesn't sound promising from the name but I'm assured it's lovely. It's probably the calm country brother in the same family of which Worcester Park is the psychologically disturbed, searching-for-identity, 50-going-on-15 brother or such like. What this means in practice is several hours on the M25 and M1 so wish me luck and I'll see you on the other side .

White precipitation in Worcester Park

One of my big disappointments about being in this country for Christmas (as opposed to Cyprus or such like) was not having the proverbial "White Christmas", particularly seeing as I'd driven four and a half hours each way to the Peak District in the hope of getting one. Receiving a phone call this morning from the Peaks to say it was now snowing didn't help, but that was soon remedied by a snow flurry, the results of which are captured below:

Brinkster Central at it's best..... I was going to take a photo of Central Road but there wasn't a trace of it there.

On a separate subject my relatives conspired together with the www.francisfrith.com to obtain some presents based on WP, namely a full sized version of this:

and the map of the area in 1894(ish) showing that the Huntsman's, The Plough and The Queen Victoria Inn (North Cheam) were all established by then:

Ironic really that with several thousand more people here now there's still about the same number of pubs.
